Congratulations, Mary Cheney

A tip of the Wizard's pointy cap to Mary over at Freedom Eden for her really excellent commentary on Mary Cheney's recently announced pregnancy.

Let me join the very, very few who seem to be congratulating Mary and her life partner Heather Poe on the upcoming birth of their child. It is a most joyous occasion.

I feel compelled to observe that Mary Cheney is one good-looking woman.

You congratulated Mary Cheney and her partner, but what does her partner have to do with it? Her partner didn't participate in the conception of the baby. That was left to Mary Cheney and the baby's biological father. Yet you didn't even mention him. Why doesn't he deserve to be congratulated? Without him there could have been no baby.

John, Merry Christmas!

I am not, as yet, aware of the role of the biological father might play in this family.

I will assume, unless we find otherwise, that the biological father is a willing donor of the sperm (and possibly an anomymous sperm donor, legally unaware of the the role his sperm plays in any pregnancy).

As we all personally witness in our American society everyday, being the biological source of a child's genetic code and being a father (or mother) are two entirely different things.

My hat is off to the parents who chose to provide a loving home to their child, biological, adopted, the result of a 2nd marriage, joining a family whose biological parent abandoned, or even born into a relationship such as the Cheney/Poe relationship.

In other words, Heather Poe is the real parent in this family, not the sperm donor who choses (for whatever reason) to remain out of the child's life.

Sorry, John, you got me started on a bit of a rant...

I have always believed that the real parent is the one who cares for the mother throughout her pregnancy and stands beside her at the moment the baby is born, not the one who casually participated for a few minutes when the baby was conceived.

The real parent is the one who is there each important moment in the child's life, from the first steps to college graduation, marriage and beyond.

I am certain that Mary Cheney and Heather Poe are grateful to and appreciative of the man who contributed to this pregnancy.

I hope and I trust that his relationship in the child's future was a decision made between all involved.
