Revisited: The Manchurian Candidate

On October 26, 2008, during the zenith of the 2008 Presidential Election Campaign, I wrote a an essay titled "The Manchurian Candidate." Lest you've somehow forgotten, The Manchurian Candidate was a best selling novel by Richard Condon written all the way back in 1959.
The Manchurian Candidate was subsequently made into
1962 blockbuster movie starring Frank Sinatra and then remade again in 2004 starring Denzel Washington.

Back in October 2008 I raised the question. Was Barack Obama a real Manchurian Candidate? Were we about to elect a man who had a very charismatic public persona, but a radically different personality and a radical political agenda we would only discover after he was elected President?

Today Kevin Hassett is asking the same basic questions over on Bloomberg News. You simply must read his chilling
‘Manchurian Candidate’ Starts War on Business.

Hassett dares to ask the unspeakable question: Is President Obama is attempting to destroy the U.S. economy? And he is coming up with some very disturbing answers. Once again I encourage you to read his entire article.

Hassett makes a compelling case that, either intentionally or by astonishingly bad management and logic, President Obama is implementing a series of carefully crafted policies that will destroy the American economy for many years to come, perhaps forever!

Obama is working to discourage private capital from entering the financial sector. Obama's policies are designed to discourage all innovation. In effect, Obama is stifling the development of any idea or product that might fuel a stock market rebound.

Hassett provides a chilling blueprint for destruction:
Another diabolical idea would be to significantly increase taxes on whatever firms are still standing. That would require subterfuge, since increasing tax rates would be too obvious. Our Manchurian Candidate would have plenty of sophisticated ideas on changing the rules to get more revenue without increasing rates, such as auctioning off “permits.”

These steps would create near-term distress. If our Manchurian Candidate leader really wanted to knock the country down for good, he would have to provide insurance against any long-run recovery.

In the end Hassett believes that Obama is not attempting the destroy America on purpose. But his final sentence is still very cautionary:
It’s clear that President Obama wants the best for our country. That makes it all the more puzzling that he would legislate like a Manchurian Candidate.

I get it. Wizard and Lee derive their historical lessons from popular literature. Wizard is instructed by the Manchurian Candidate and Lee by The Sum of All Fears. Takes us back to Dan Quayle and his attempt to derive political points borrowed from Murphy Brown. Cute.

Vigilante Read Hassett's article. That's where the meat is. It's not cute.

We're dealing with something much more serious than the War in Iraq you opposed so eloquently for so many years.

I found Lee's addendum thought provoking, even if it was a tad obvious.

As I read the article I kept thinking back to the 10 plank's of communist manifesto, obvious or not, I thought the parallel had value within the context.

I really wish someone would lay out what the Obama plan for economic recovery is and what road marks we can expect and a time line. The vagueness is frightening.

"As I read the article" should say "As I read the Hassett article"

The thing is, if Obama in fact does over-reach, he'll probaly end up losing the congress in 2010. Yes, "elections have consequences", but do policies and then some. Should be an interesting couple of years, huh, friends?

For heaven's sake Wizard. Now you are seeing conspiracies around every corner. I am quite frankly surprised that would post such nonsense. Normally you are quite level headed. I have to agree completely with Vigil here.
